Sausage balls are one of the best appetizers I can think of when it comes to entertaining guests.   A versatile finger food, sausage balls can be dressed up for an upscale cocktail party or stripped down for the weekly pre-game parking lot tailgate.   Any time you’re cooking for guests, sausage balls should be on the menu!

Whether your function is for 3 or 300, sausage balls represent a unique option for guests who have grown tired of the classic meatball and marinara appetizer that can be found on just about every hors d’ovres tray these days .   What makes sausage balls unique is the number of ingredient combinations that are possible when you start cooking with sausage.    For example, in Germany alone, there are over 200 different varieties of sausage!    In addition to a large number of meat and spice options, sausage balls also make a great vehicle for gourmet and exotic dips that can really elevate the flavor and turn an average appetizer into the life of the party!

Sausage balls are most popular around Christmas time in the United States.   Holiday parties are a logical choice due to the number of gatherings where appetizers and finger foods dominate the menus.   Although holidays are the most popular, sausage balls are growing in popularity year-round at more common events such as:

  • Sports tailgate parties
  • Birthday celebrations
  • Office parties
  • Family gatherings
  • Picnics
  • Weddings
  • Cocktail receptions
  • Dinner
  • Movie or sitcom nights
  • and more!

The growing popularity of sausage balls is no doubt due to the fact that they are relatively easy to make, super easy to eat and can be made to suite the tastes  of even the most finicky of eaters!

All the ingredients used to make sausage balls can be commonly found in just about any grocery store or kitchen. Ground meats, grated cheese and self rising flour are some of the basic ingredients required to make most varieties of soft yet crispy sausage balls.   Below is the basic procedure for making just about any variety:
